Should’a Could’a: Shush the Critic. Bring on Your Inner Coach.

By Tamara John

Does your inner critic harp on all the things you should be doing or could have done? What in the world is all that nagging about—and why do we let it run the show?

Here’s the truth: most of us, in the moment, are doing our bona fide best. We act from what we know, shaped by our upbringing, our experiences, and the conditioning we’ve collected along the way.

But if your inner critic is hogging the mic lately, it’s time to nudge that voice aside and make room for someone far more fabulous: your inner coach.

Meet Your Inner Coach

This isn’t toxic positivity. This is strategic compassion. Your inner coach doesn’t sugarcoat—it guides. It says:

  • “Hey, did you catch that note to self?”

  • “Let’s pay attention to that.”

  • “Whoa, let’s pause before replying right now.”

This voice helps you observe instead of react. It invites self-awareness, not self-judgment. And that’s where the shift begins.

From Critic to Clarity

Let the critic run its outdated program if you must—but now, you’re watching. You’re asking:

  • Where did this voice come from?

  • What gives it the right to push me around?

You will hit the moment of clarity:

Enough is enough.

That’s when your inner coach steps in—not to fix the past, but to honor your awareness. Even if nothing outside has changed, you have. And that changes everything.

Perspective Is Power

Now your personal lens is clear and you make choices that resonate with the outcomes you actually want. And when you give yourself a break—when you pause, breathe, and shift perspective—that’s when brilliance seeps through.

From that place, you choose differently. You choose forward. And that’s what counts.
